The vulva, the global term for the outer part of the female reproductive system, includes structures like the clitoris, labia majora and labia minora. When rapidly dividing cells impact any structure within the vulva, vulvar cancer is diagnosed. In most cases, vulvar cancer starts in the labia majora or labia minora.

Vulvar cancer may be suspected when these changes develop on the vulva:

  • Appearance of a mole-like area
  • Burning or pain
  • Changes in appearance in an area
  • Development of a pink, red or white lump
  • Irregular bleeding or discharge
  • Itching
  • Open sore
  • Red, scaly area
  • Skin thickening

Outcomes for surgically treated vulvar cancer are excellent, and when localized to the vulva, five-year survival rates exceed 85 percent. However, survival rates drop to only 19 percent when the cancer spreads to distant sites. For more information on vulvar cancer survival rates, visit the American Cancer Society website.

You can lower your risk of cancer by taking steps to build a healthy lifestyle. Here are some ways you can lower your risk for this disease, as well as improve your overall basic health:

  • Avoid using tobacco products. Tobacco has been tied to multiple cancers, and it is responsible for 90 percent of lung cancer deaths.
  • Stay physically active. Your physical activity is related to risk for colon and breast cancer. Excess weight gained from inactivity increases the risk of multiple cancers.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. It is important to be mindful of how much alcohol you drink. Alcohol intake, even in moderate amounts, can increase the risk for colon, breast, esophageal and oropharyngeal cancer.
  • Learn about screenings. Your primary care doctor can recommend appropriate cancer screenings based on your age, personal risk and family history.
  • Advanced age (70+)
  • Cervical cancer
  • Cigarette usage
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Lichen sclerosus (when the vulvar skin thins and becomes itchy)
  • Precancerous changes to the vulva, known as vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia
  • For your first visit, you will be directed to the multidisciplinary clinic on the first floor of the Whitney-Hendrickson Building. Directions to the Whitney-Hendrickson Building.
