Children & Young Adult Headache and Research Program

A female doctor wearing a white coat and a female nurse wearing floral scrubs meet with an adolescent female patient. The Children & Young Adult Headache and Research Program at Kentucky Neuroscience Institute (KNI) is the only multidisciplinary headache clinic in the region focused on children, teenagers and young adults ages 25 and younger.

Many kids complain of headaches, but it is not uncommon for pediatric headaches to go overlooked or untreated. In partnership with Kentucky Children’s Hospital, our specialists aim to fill that need for our community and help children and young adults live a better quality of life.

The first step in pediatric headache treatment is acknowledging that headaches impact children and young adults in their daily lives, and the second step is finding the right treatment so that patients can take control of their lives.

For every patient, our treatment goal is to reduce the number of headache days and to improve quality of life. We offer several forms of treatment ranging from lifestyle changes to medication, and we work closely with patients and families to find a solution best suited to them.

Comprehensive Headache Treatment

Treating headaches is more than just providing medicine. It’s also offering patient and family education so patients can understand why headaches happen and why the recommended treatment will be effective. Finding individualized care with a diversity of methods is always the goal.

Methods of treatment, both medical and non-medical, may include:

  • Assessment by a pain psychologist
  • Biofeedback
  • Botox injections for chronic headaches
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Infusions
  • Nerve blocks
  • Neuromodulation devices

What to Expect During Your First Visit

After making an appointment, you or your child will receive a questionnaire that must be filled out and sent back before the date of your appointment. The questionnaire will help us understand you or your child’s headache concerns and guide us in providing personalized care.

The first visit will be with a headache specialist doctor and a headache nurse to create a robust treatment plan. We encourage setting up a follow-up appointment in six to eight weeks after your first appointment.
