UK HealthCast: Dr. Sharoon Qaiser on the Children and Young Adult Headache and Research Program
UK HealthCast is a podcast series featuring interviews with UK HealthCare experts on a variety of health-related topics, from how to recognize stroke symptoms to what patients need to know about clinical trials and more.
This week’s UK HealthCast features Dr. Sharoon Qaiser, director of the Children and Young Adult Headache and Research Program here at UK HealthCare. During the podcast, Dr. Qaiser discussed why we get headaches, the difference between a normal headache and a migraine, and the expert care offered by his team – part of the only multidisciplinary headache program in Central Kentucky specifically designed for children and young adults:
“We work in close collaboration with our adolescent medicine and pain psychologists, because according to multiple studies, if you have frequent headaches, you more than likely have other stressors as well, or it causes anxiety, or those children who have migraines have a very high prevalence of different psychological concerns, including depression, anxiety, and some other things,” Dr. Qaiser said. “We also work in collaboration with nutritionists because that's one of the things where we really have a great challenge because of the role of different diets in migraine and other headache disorders.”
“Any healthcare provider can make a referral to our patient access center. I always encourage my colleagues and other providers, that if you are worried, don't hesitate to reach out to me. My email address is on our headache page. If you're worried about your patient, just drop me an email. I am more than happy to discuss over the phone or whichever way I can help.”
