Neuro-ophthalmology
Neuro-ophthalmologists at UK HealthCare specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and management of vision problems that stem from the nervous system instead of the eyes. UK HealthCare is home to one of just two neuro-ophthalmology academic referral centers in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Unlike eye conditions that are caused by problems with one or more parts of the eye, such as age-related macular degeneration, neuro-ophthalmic issues are vision problems caused by malfunctions of the optic nerve and nervous system or medical conditions such as multiple sclerosis. Neuro-ophthalmalmic problems can result in eye movement abnormalities, eye misalignment and vision issues.
Neuro-ophthalmologist exams may include extensive visual functions testing, static and kinetic visual field testing, optical coherence tomography, and neurological, neurosurgical and neuro-radiological services so physicians can deliver quality care to patients with neuro-ophthalmic problems.
Neuro-ophthalmic consultation services are offered to both patients within and outside of UK HealthCare who are dealing with afferent and efferent visual system disorder (eye movement disorders or issues with how someone sees the world). We accept referrals for outpatient consultations from ophthalmologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, rehabilitation centers, primary care doctors, pediatricians, oncologists and optometrists.
Both pediatric and adult patients can benefit from neuro-ophthalmic services offered at UK HealthCare. For patients who don’t respond to standard treatment, clinical trials intended to identify new treatment methods and solutions to neuro-ophthalmic issues are also available.
