The UK Neuro-Ophthalmology Service is one of the two academic referral centers in the state of Kentucky evaluating patients with neurologic diseases that have manifestations in the visual system.
We provide a timely and effective consultation service to both patients and providers at UK HealthCare, across Kentucky and in surrounding regions.
The neuro-ophthalmology division provides outpatient consultations with referrals from ophthalmologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, rehabilitation centers (such as Cardinal Hill), primary care doctors, pediatricians, oncologists and optometrists as well as inpatient consultations for patients admitted to UK Chandler and UK Good Samaritan hospitals.
Services are offered to both pediatric and adult patients.
Neuro-ophthalmology offers consultation services to patients with eye movement abnormalities, misalignment of eyes and vision problems related to diseases of the nervous system. Common referrals to neuro-ophthalmology include: afferent visual system disorders (e.g. optic neuritis, ischemic and other optic neuropathies, papilledema, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis or strokes, affecting vision or visual fields) and efferent visual system disorders (e.g. anisocoria, diplopia from third, fifth or sixth nerve palsy, internuclear ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, nystagmus, thyroid ophthalmopathy, etc.)
Resources available to neuro-ophthalmology patients include:
- Static and kinetic visual-field testing.
- Extensive visual functions testing including color vision and contrast sensitivity.
- Optical coherence tomography.
- Neurological, neurosurgical and neuro-radiological services at UK HealthCare.
We are also involved in clinical trials for neuro-ophthalmic diseases.
