A blood screening test for spinal muscular atrophy has been included in newborn wellness screenings across Kentucky since 2019. Today, because of these screenings, more than nine in 10 children with SMA in the Bluegrass region are identified at birth and quickly referred to specialized care. Genetic testing confirms the diagnosis after screening or if SMA is suspected in older children.
The diagnostic process may also include additional testing.
