Children receiving treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy will be closely monitored by their multidisciplinary care team for complications and side effects. Other specialists, such as cardiologists and pulmonologists, will be involved in follow-up care as the disease progresses. Lung infections, breathing and heart problems, and scoliosis are common complications of DMD. Many children with DMD will require a wheelchair by ages 10-12. Problems with breathing may eventually necessitate the use of assisted ventilation. Your neurologist and the NEMO team will be here every step of the way to help guide your child’s care.
