To figure out what’s causing your leg issues, your vascular specialist will ask about your symptoms and medical history. They will also perform a physical exam and look for signs of venous insufficiency, such as leg swelling, skin changes and varicose veins.
Confirming the diagnosis may require an an imaging test called duplex ultrasound. This test uses sound waves to create images of your veins so your physician can determine how well the valves are working. Your physician can also see whether a blood clot is present.
