Having a pulmonary embolism puts you at a higher risk of developing blood clots in the future, so you will want to take steps to protect your health.

Keep up with your medical appointments. Seeing your primary care provider and any necessary specialists can help you spot signs of another clot before it becomes serious. They can also monitor existing clots to ensure they don’t grow.

Continue taking medicines as directed for as long as they are recommended. Your provider may prescribe blood thinners for at least three months or longer. Don’t stop taking them unless your provider says to do so.

You may also want to take other precautions to avoid additional blood clots. This can include taking breaks to avoid sitting for long periods and wearing compression socks or stockings. Heart-healthy lifestyle habits, such as regular exercise and a diet low in saturated fat, can also be helpful.
