Early treatment is key to survival with endocarditis. Treatment often includes several weeks of IV antibiotics and sometimes surgery. Prompt treatment can help people recover from endocarditis, but it can be fatal or debilitating when left untreated.
Treatment for infectious endocarditis includes IV antibiotics, typically for four to six weeks. You may receive antibiotics while in the hospital initially. If you are stable enough to go home, these medicines can be continued at home with the help of a home health nurse.
If endocarditis damaged your heart valves, you may require surgery to repair the valve. Other surgeries or procedures may be required to treat complications of endocarditis.
