Every type of congenital heart disease requires lifelong care. Patients with tetralogy will need regular visits with a cardiologist to ensure their hearts are working like they should be. Some patients will also need medications to manage arrhythmia and antibiotics before dental procedures to prevent endocarditis, a bacterial infection that affects the inner lining of the heart.

Women with tetralogy of Fallot can successfully get pregnant and carry children to term with only an average risk of complications, including pulmonary hypertension. However, there is a slightly higher risk (3 to 5 percent) of passing the condition to your child, and genetic testing may be recommended.
