ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)

Follow-up care

If you or someone around you is experiencing signs of a heart attack, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, or discomfort in the arms, neck, jaw or back, call 911 immediately. Do not wait or try to drive yourself to the hospital. Every second counts, and emergency responders can begin life-saving treatment on the way to the hospital.

When you have a heart attack, including a STEMI, you’re at a higher risk of having another one. As you recover, focus on carefully following your care team’s guidance about healing and protecting your heart in the future.

In the immediate aftermath of a heart attack, you’ll need to follow up with a cardiologist and other providers regularly. Be sure to keep these appointments and to take medicines as prescribed.

You’ll also need to complete a cardiac rehabilitation program, which will help you learn how to care for your heart. Cardiac rehabilitation typically takes place several times a week for a few months. It includes supervised exercise, nutritional guidance and other support, including smoking cessation tools.

You can also take other steps to improve and protect your heart health. Incorporate heart-healthy lifestyle habits into your daily routine, such as:

  • Exercising regularly
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Not smoking
  • Finding meaningful ways to ease stress
