Pediatric hematology at Kentucky Children’s Hospital
Blood disorders affect many children and teens across the United States. These can include anemias, platelet problems, bleeding and clotting.
Conditions affecting the blood are treated by a specialty called hematology, provided by doctors called hematologists. If your child shows signs of a blood disorder, our pediatric hematology team is here to help. We offer a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options to manage symptoms and enhance well-being.
At the DanceBlue clinic, we diagnose and treat a variety of blood disorders and malignancies, including:
- Anemias, including iron deficiency, sickle cell disease, hereditary spherocytosis and thalassemias
- Bleeding disorders, including hemophilia and von Willebrand disease
- Bone marrow failure syndromes, such as aplastic anemia
- Low white blood cell count and neutropenia leading to infections
- Thrombocytopenia (low platelets, including idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura)
- Vascular malformations
Our exceptional team of pediatric hematologists, nurses, pharmacists and social workers work together to care for children who have blood disorders. Your child is unique, and we strongly believe their treatment plan should be, too. That’s why we tailor their care to best fit their individual wants and needs.
For patients who have hemophilia or other congenital bleeding disorders, treatment and other services are provided through the UK HealthCare Hemophilia Treatment Center.
Hematology services may include treatment related to all components related to the blood. These include red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, blood vessels, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen and the proteins involved in bleeding and clotting.
Why choose UK HealthCare for pediatric hematology and oncology services?
Our pediatric hematology and oncology experts at Kentucky Children’s Hospital are highly experienced and known in their field. They work together to advance leading-edge treatments and actively participate in groundbreaking clinical studies. These studies include those offered by the Children’s Oncology Group, sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.
When a child or teen is treated for cancer or a blood disorder, it can impact every area of life. That’s why we provide services and assistance to help families cope. Support includes social work, child life and financial navigation. Additionally, our PAWS (Providing Assistance With Schools) Program serves as an educational liaison between the school, the family and the medical team. The goal of PAWS is to reduce challenges at school that might arise due to your child’s diagnosis, treatment plan and frequent absences.
Sometimes, cancer can run in families. Our team includes doctors and genetic counselors who can identify whether there might be a genetic basis for cancer. For kids who have an inherited predisposition to developing cancer, our Cancer Predisposition Clinic is specially designed to meet their needs. This clinic offers outstanding medical care and specialized psychosocial services for patients who have a greater cancer risk.
Adolescents and young adults with cancer face unique challenges. In many cases, cancer in a young adult behaves more like cancer in a child rather than an adult cancer. Recognizing this, our UK Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program brings the services of our pediatric oncologists together with those of the UK Markey Cancer Center. Through this program, we provide high-quality cancer care for those ages 15 to 29.
Because we know care for childhood cancer doesn’t end with the last treatment, our services don’t end there, either. Treatment options for cancer carry their own health risks, which is why UK HealthCare offers a Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic. This clinic monitors for signs that cancer has returned, as well as any lingering negative effects from treatment.
