Rheumatology is the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal and autoimmune disorders, commonly called rheumatic diseases. These diseases affect the bones, joints and muscles, often causing joint pain and inflammation.
Autoimmune disorders, where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy parts of the body, can also cause inflammation. One example of an autoimmune disorder is rheumatoid arthritis, which is diagnosed when the immune system attacks normal cells in the joints, causing joint pain and inflammation.
