Eosinophilic Esophagitis Clinic
In the last few decades, we have seen more conditions linked to allergic reactions in the gut. We believe this is linked to:
- Changes in our environment
- Changes in what we eat
- The use of medicines that can affect how the good bacteria in our gut help keep us healthy
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE) is one such condition. In kids, it can occur at any age. It is a slowly progressive inflammation that mainly affects your swallowing tube or esophagus. If the inflammation is not stopped, it can become difficult to swallow food, a condition called dysphagia.
EOE is hard to diagnose, as the symptoms vary across ages and can include:
- Poor appetite
- Vomiting
- Irritability in young children
- Difficulty in swallowing solids and sometimes even having food stick in the throat, which becomes an emergency
It takes a dedicated team of providers to suspect this condition, make the diagnosis and then determine the best way to manage it.
Here at Kentucky Children’s Hospital, we have the team and technology to do just that. Our multiteam approach allows us to manage diets, provide support to patients and their families, and use medical therapy when needed to treat this condition.
