Services offered onsite at Kentucky Children's Hospital include:
Advanced cardiac imaging
Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scans are two forms of advanced cardiac imaging that we provide for children and adults of all ages with congenital and acquired heart disease. Our experts have extensive experience in cardiac imaging which ensures rapid and accurate diagnosis. These highly specialized services are an important component of the comprehensive cardiac care that our program provides to our patients and families.
James Quintessenza, MD, is chief of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at KCH, in addition to his appointment as a CT surgeon at Cincinnati Children's. Dr. Quintessenza has extensive experience and expertise as a cardiac surgeon and a long track record of leadership in the field.
When your child has any procedure that requires them to be asleep, they are in the care of our dedicated pediatric cardiac anesthesiology team. Our anesthesiologist is extensively trained to ensure that your child is safe and comfortable during a procedure.
Arrhythmias and irregularities of heart rhythm in children are different from those in adults and require the expertise of a physician specially trained in pediatric electrophysiology. Our electrophysiologist, trained in pediatric heart rhythm disorders, provides the expertise your child needs.
Our congenital echocardiography lab serves patients of all ages from fetus through adulthood. The lab is staffed by pediatric cardiologists with expertise in interpreting complex congenital heart abnormalities, and experienced, pediatric and fetal-certified sonographers. Our team supports local hospitals and institutions throughout Kentucky in an effort for patients and families to receive quality pediatric heart care closer to home. Our goal is to provide the highest quality cardiac care to patients and families throughout the Commonwealth.
The fetal cardiac care team consists of fetal cardiologists, fetal sonographers, a patient navigator, and a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). Our fetal cardiologists are specialized, board-certified pediatric cardiologists with expertise in fetal congenital heart disease, the cardiovascular system and heart rhythm disorders. Our sonographers performing ultrasounds are certified, fetal heart ultrasound technicians, and are part of our IAC accredited congenital echocardiography lab. Our fetal cardiac patient navigator guides families through the potentially complex medical system, and our social worker provides resources and counseling to families through difficult, life-changing situations.
The fetal cardiac team works very closely with our obstetrical and high risk maternal fetal medicine colleagues to optimize family care and delivery planning. Our multidisciplinary approach includes access to subspecialty services such as neonatology, pediatric surgery, pediatric genetics, and pediatric advanced care teams.Together, we strive to provide medical care at the highest standard while providing needed resources and compassionate support to our patients and their families.
Many children with heart defects can now be treated with interventional or therapeutic cardiac catheterization procedures rather than having to go through heart surgery. We take the utmost care to evaluate what treatment will be the most effective and least invasive for your child.
