DanceBlue Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Genetic Counseling
At the DanceBlue Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Genetic Counseling clinic, we help young patients and their families understand genetic conditions that can increase the risk of cancer or blood disorders. We guide you through screening, treatment planning and follow-up care.
Our patients meet with a licensed genetic counselor who is specially trained to help families understand inherited health conditions and genetic testing. They will determine if and when your child should be tested for a cancer predisposition syndrome or a familial blood disorder. Genetic testing is often performed using a blood draw or cheek swab sample.
Who we help
We treat children and young adults up to age 29 at our clinic.
We see patients who have cancer or blood disorders. We also patients with a family history of childhood-onset cancer or hematologic genetic syndromes. This includes siblings or relatives who test positive for hereditary cancer syndromes or blood disorders.
Conditions we test for
We see an array of conditions for pediatric hematology and oncology genetic counseling, such as:
- Anemias, including sickle cell disease and thalassemias
- Bleeding disorders, including hemophilia and von Willebrand disease
- Bone marrow failure syndromes, including Fanconi anemia
- DICER1 syndrome
- Li-Fraumeni syndrome
- Multiple endocrine neoplasia
- Polyposis syndromes, including familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome (FAP), juvenile polyposis syndrome (JPS) and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS)
- Vascular malformations
- Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome
What happens after testing?
If your child is found to have an inherited condition that may increase their risk for cancer, a blood disease, or other health problems, we coordinate follow-up care through our Pediatric and Young Adult Cancer Predisposition Clinic or other appropriate provider who will tailor your child’s care plan to their specific condition and needs.
If necessary, we can help adult relatives undergo their own genetic testing through UK Markey Cancer Center.
We can also refer patients to Project Inherited Cancer Risk, a groundbreaking clinical study that identifies young patients who have had cancer with gene changes that increase the risk for cancer.
This research study offers every pediatric cancer patient at Golisano Children's at UK access to DNA sequencing to look for more than 120 inherited cancer genes. If one of those genetic markers comes back positive, UK Golisano Children's and the UK Markey Cancer Center can develop a personalized care plan for that patient and their family.
