Hip Pain

Because it is one of the largest joints in your body, your hip can cause a great deal of pain as it wears down or if you sustain an injury.

Pain, stiffness and swelling in your hip shouldn’t interfere with your day-to-day life. If it does, it might be time to seek treatment. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll need a hip replacement. In fact, the hip specialists at UK Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine offer a wide range of evidence-based nonsurgical and surgical treatments that are proven to help get you back on track.

As one of the largest hip programs in Kentucky, UK Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine treats a wide variety of problems, from traumatic injuries to multiple forms of arthritis. Before resorting to hip joint replacement surgery, we often use nonsurgical treatment methods — such as lifestyle changes, medications, injections and physical therapy — to address hip pain issues. Our hip specialists do everything we can to preserve your hip and prevent new problems from developing down the line.

Hip Pain Conditions Treated

Treatment options we offer:

  • Hip arthroscopy — During this minimally invasive procedure, the surgeon inserts a flexible, pencil-thick tube with a camera into the hip. The camera allows the surgeon to look inside the joint to evaluate the damage, which often can be treated at the same time using small tools.
  • Hip replacement — If hip arthritis is advanced, the orthopaedic surgeon may recommend removing the hip joint and replacing it with an implanted artificial joint.
  • Hip revision — If an earlier hip implant has failed, worn down or become infected, a hip specialist can remove and replace part or all of the artificial hip. Surgical dislocation — If there is a congenital problem with the hip, the hip can be accessed via an open approach to address the misshapen bone and sometimes requires the addition of an osteotomy to align the bones.
  • Periacetabular osteotomy — If the socket didn’t form properly, the bones around the socket can be cut, allowing for the socket to be repositioned. This allows for improvement in pain and prevention of arthritis in the future.
  • Trochanteric bursectomy — Used to treat hip bursitis, this minimally invasive surgery uses arthroscopic techniques to remove the bursa. This is typically performed along with either lengthening of the IT band and/or repair of torn gluteus medius/minimus (the rotator cuff of the hip).
