Sports Rehabilitation Residency Program

ABPTRFEThe UK Sports Rehabilitation Program is proud to offer a 12-month sports physical therapy residency program.

Beginning on September 1 of each year, one resident will immerse themselves in an intensive and comprehensive evidence-based clinical practice and education program designed to prepare and develop the resident for advanced, independent practice in the area of sports physical therapy.

This program allows the motivated and dedicated professional the opportunity to become a community leader in sports rehabilitation and to be prepared to sit for the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialty’s sports clinical specialist certification exam.

Residents will be full-time employees of the UK Sports Rehabilitation Clinic and will have the opportunity to focus on clinical care in sports rehabilitation in our state-of-the-art facility. Residents will receive one-on-one mentoring from experienced, board-certified sports and orthopaedic specialists and will also gain experience in the provision of athletic venue and training room coverage and care.

Residents will complete a comprehensive didactic program consisting of a combination of classroom, hands-on and online instruction as well as research lab shadowing. In addition, residents will have the opportunity to shadow our renowned physicians in the clinic and operating room and to engage in journal clubs, sports medicine rounds and sports medicine conferences. Teaching opportunities in the College of Health Sciences Physical Therapy Program are also included in the program, and residents will be afforded time to develop a research project suitable for publication or presentation.

The program has a 100% pass rate on the SCS board certification exam, 100% graduation rate, and 100% resident retention rate. Consider the potential benefit to your patients, to your community and to your career that residency training at UK affords you. Join our team and continue your journey to excellence in sports rehabilitation!

Mission

The mission of the UK Sports Rehabilitation Residency Program is to prepare and develop the resident/candidate for advanced, independent practice in the area of sports physical therapy and ultimately for their role of contributing to the profession and society as a board certified clinical specialist in sports rehabilitation.

Graduates will demonstrate their competency in and dedication to the sports medicine field by providing excellent patient care/customer service through efficient, evidence based practice; advancing the profession through continual learning and participation in clinical research; and educating and serving as an ambassador to the public, physical therapy students, and other professions in the organization and medical community. In doing so, the resident will uphold the missions, visions and purposes held by the University of Kentucky, UK Rehabilitation Services Department, UK HealthCare, and UK College of Health Sciences Division of Physical Therapy.

Goals

To develop and educate the resident to become a highly competent clinician who is well prepared to provide efficient, evidenced based quality care in the management of sports related injuries and pathologies as well as achieve ABPTS certification in sports physical therapy.

To promote the practice of continuous learning, effective communication and quality improvement management in the resident in a multidisciplinary sports medicine environment.

To foster or provide resources needed to engage in clinical research opportunities at the organization specific to the specialty area in order to advance the body of knowledge in sports physical therapy and assist the resident in developing competence in the utilization and review of research to provide effective evidence based care.

To support the organization’s mission of providing community service and being an information resource by fostering the spirit of professional leadership and benevolence in the residency program.

To prepare the resident to become an effective teacher and mentor to others in sports physical therapy.
