Foot & Ankle Pain

A foot and ankle patient kicks a soccer ball in the physical therapy room.

Some foot and ankle pain, such as that caused by walking too much or wearing shoes that don’t fit correctly, is temporary and will go away after resting and using an ice pack. Other conditions, however, like those that are the result of traumatic injuries, joint problems and deformities, are more serious and need a personalized, comprehensive approach to care.

If your foot and ankle pain is ongoing or you’ve suffered an acute traumatic injury, it’s important to get expert care from an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in issues that affect the foot and ankle.

Foot & ankle pain conditions

Depending on your age, lifestyle and severity of symptoms, your treatment options will vary. Some foot pain and ankle pain can be treated without surgery, while others will require major reconstruction.

At UK Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine, our foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeons treat these conditions:

Foot & ankle pain surgical treatments

  • Joint preservation — This alternative to total joint replacement uses nonsurgical techniques, such as injections, plasma therapy or stem cell therapy, as well as surgical techniques, to preserve the joint. As a result, joint replacement surgery can often be delayed or prevented.
  • Minimally invasive surgery — Rather than performing surgery through a large, open incision, surgeons can access the foot and ankle and perform surgery through one or more smaller incisions.
  • Total ankle replacement surgery — The ends of the ankle and shinbone are resurfaced and replaced with metal components. A plastic spacer is placed between the metal to help the new joint move smoothly.
