Elbow Pain

The elbow is composed of three bones — the humerus, the ulna and the radius. The hinge joint is where the three bones meet and is surrounded by ligaments, nerves, muscles and tendons that all work together to allow your arm to move.

When something goes wrong with any part of your elbow, it can cause pain, inflammation, swelling and issues with range of motion. Elbow pain can be the result of any number of issues, including overuse, accidents, diseases and degeneration. Because there are numerous causes for elbow pain, it’s critical to see an elbow expert, like those with UK Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine, so you can receive a proper diagnosis and begin treatment.

  • Elbow pain conditions & treatment

While elbow pain can often be treated at home with rest, ice or heat, some conditions will require the expertise of an elbow specialist with UK Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine. Some elbow conditions we treat include:

  • Elbow pain surgical options

    • Arthroscopy — During this minimally invasive procedure, the surgeon inserts a flexible, pencil-thick tube with a camera into the elbow. The camera allows the surgeon to look inside the joint to evaluate the damage, which often can be treated at the same time using small tools.
    • Arthroscopic recontouring — During an arthroscopy, the surgeon can access the elbow joint and clean up cartilage debris and smooth bone and cartilage surface.
    • Elbow replacement — If elbow arthritis is advanced, the orthopaedic surgeon may recommend removing the elbow joint and replacing it with an implanted artificial joint.
    • Revision elbow arthroplasty — If an elbow prosthesis becomes damaged, infected, or loosens or wears out, revision surgery may need to be performed to replace the original prosthesis.
