Every diabetic nephropathy case is different. We will work with you to develop a personalized treatment according to your specific needs. You will also require referral to a kidney specialist for management of your kidney complications. Your plan may use a combination of approaches that include:
- Dietary changes
- Medicines to control blood sugar
- Medicines to lower blood pressure, such as ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers
Many newer medicines are now available that have protective effects on the kidneys, and your diabetes specialist and kidney specialist will discuss those options with you.
Once you develop kidney failure, or end stage kidney disease, your treatment options will include:
- Dialysis
- Kidney transplant
