Jaundice

Jaundice is usually the first sign, and sometimes the only sign, of liver disease. Jaundice often results from high levels of bilirubin (bile pigment) in the bloodstream, which is then passed through the kidneys. These high levels can cause an obstruction of the bile duct, often due to a tumor or gallstoneHepatitis can also cause jaundice.

Symptoms

Jaundice symptoms include:

  • Yellow discoloring of the skin and whites of the eyes.
  • Dark urine.
  • Nausea.
  • Itching.
  • Light-colored stool.
  • Abdominal pain or swelling.

Treatment

If you notice any jaundice symptoms, contact your health care provider. In some cases, jaundice can lead to conditions that require a liver transplant. The Digestive Health Program works closely with the UK Liver Transplant Program to offer comprehensive care. The program is nationally recognized by the United Network of Organ Sharing and the University Hospital Consortium for maintaining excellent outcomes.
