Comprehensive Stroke Center

World-class stroke care right here in Kentucky

Over 2,000 people in Kentucky died of stroke in 2017*. It’s the fifth leading cause of death in the Commonwealth. And even those who survive often face a lifetime of disability.

At UK HealthCare, we’re on a mission to provide the highest level of stroke care possible. And to turn those statistics around.

Our Stroke Center has earned Comprehensive Stroke Center status – the highest rating a stroke center can achieve. We’re one of only four centers in Kentucky and only 100 nationwide to earn this designation.

We are a Comprehensive Stroke Center, what does that mean?

Stringent protocols

To earn the Comprehensive designation, we had to meet stringent protocols for the treatment of strokes and show that we are capable of treating the most complicated strokes 24 hours a day every day, even if several people come in to the hospital needing stroke treatment at exactly the same time. We also proved that we offer the most advanced treatments available and participate in research that helps find even better treatments, including ways to reverse damage to the brain after a stroke occurs.

Specially trained staff

Our team of highly skilled stroke neurologists and other medical staff is specially trained in the recognition and treatment of stroke. They are some of the best at what they do. In fact, we wrote the stroke treatment protocol followed in the state of Kentucky and in places beyond its borders as well.

Our outcomes prove we're making a difference. National statistics show that stroke patients at Comprehensive Stroke Centers have a 30 percent better chance of surviving than those treated at other hospitals. And at UK HealthCare, our outcomes meet or exceed those national standards.

Kentucky's challenge

Stroke is not only one of the leading causes of death in Kentucky and the U.S., it’s also a leading cause of long-term disability. Which means that even if you survive a stroke, it may have a devastating effect on your life.

Our focus is on treating patients quickly and expertly, so that we not only keep them alive, we return them, as often as possible, to the life they had before.

Not everyone who has a stroke needs a Comprehensive Stroke Center, but for those who do, we can make all the difference. It’s our mission.

If you need care

With a stroke, time is very important. The more quickly someone seeks medical treatment, the greater their chances of making a full recovery. If you have symptoms of stroke, please call 911 immediately.

If you or someone you know previously had a stroke but are experiencing new or worsening symptoms, please seek help immediately.

People who have a history of stroke but no new symptoms are evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine whether treatment may be of help to them. Please call 859-323-5661 to speak with someone in our clinic.
