If you’ve experienced a vertebral fracture, it’s important to carefully follow your provider’s recommendations, including resting as needed. Doing so will allow your spine to heal thoroughly.
Your care team will provide you with information about what activities are safe for you to perform and when, as well as how to manage pain and other symptoms as your fractures heal. Even after your spine heals, it’s important to protect it.
If osteoporosis was the underlying cause behind your spinal fracture, take medicines as directed to strengthen your bones and prevent future fractures. Take care not to lift heavy objects and to lift using correct form when you pick up anything.
You can also take other steps to lower your risk of future vertebral fractures, such as these:
- Wear your seatbelt whenever you’re in a car.
- Remove clutter and other hazards in the home that can cause you to trip and fall.
- Eat a bone-healthy diet rich in vitamin D and calcium.
