After surgical treatment for foraminal stenosis, you will have follow-up visits with your spine team. It’s important to keep these appointments to ensure you are healing appropriately.
In most cases, you will be advised to avoid heavy lifting and certain other high-intensity activities for a few weeks to a few months. Otherwise, you can usually return to normal activities within a few days after surgery.
While there’s no way to fully prevent foraminal stenosis, avoiding repetitive stress and strain on your spine can be helpful. Use proper lifting techniques and ask for assistance when lifting particularly heavy objects. Exercises that strengthen your core, including your abdominal muscles and torso, can also help reduce stress on the back.
