About

David B. Drake, MD, a native of Kentucky, earned his medical degree from UK before completing residencies in general surgery at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minn., and in plastic surgery at the University of Virginia. He went on to complete a burn fellowship, a hand surgery fellowship and a microvascular surgery fellowship at the University of Virginia. He returned to Kentucky in 2018 to join the Division of Plastic Surgery to practice a broad range of Plastic Surgery including surgery of the hand and wrist.

Personal Statement

Plastic Surgery is an incredible field in which to practice in that we treat all ages and all socioeconomic groups. Our field contains the skin and its contents from aesthetic surgery to the most complex reconstructive surgery following trauma or cancer. This process also enables us to develop personal relationships with our patients and take them from a place of injury or deformity to restoration of form and function.

The appreciation and gratitude of my patients drives me to continue this journey. I also have the privilege of teaching residents and medical students and exposing them to the power of transformation that we sometimes can effect on our patients. Outside of the hospital I am engaged in sport activities (golf) and a full life of travel and adventure with my wife and our families.

I would have liked more time to discuss the procedure, success and failure of the reccomended treatment. This was likely due to my understanding (this is a first time experience for hand surgery). My understanding and attempt to contemplate all the options is very narrow.

I was topless being measured when Dr Drake opened the door. Didn't knock to see if I was covered up or anything. There were many people outside the room who likely saw me standing there nude.

Provider was rude both resident and Drake. When expressing concern for the fact that a good chunk of my child's finger was torn off and he has been experiencing awful nerve pain Drake didn't care. Stating he wasn't given any med to alleviate this nerve pain. Stated that he was not given narcotics as if we were drug seeking. We didn't ask for narcotics! I don't want my child on narcotics. But there is no reason a low dose nerve medication couldn't have been prescribed. Instead my child has sleepless nights and constant pain from the nerve damage. Drake didn't have any concern for my child in this matter. Being in the medical field myself this is very disturbing. This doesn't hold up to the uk model of every patient every time. We are clearly just a number and this is no compassion that was provided to my child.

Both Assistant Pam and Dr. Drake's treatment were exactly the same. I feel they are both experts in their field and I feel confident my finger will heal.

I explained to the doctor multiple times I was not comfortable with his treatment plan. He did not explain any medical reasoning for his decisions nor provide any reassurance of my concerns, only that he would feel more comfortable doing my procedure in the OR. I was sent in for a very simple, in office, lesion removal and left terrified and confused. His goal was to take more tissue than necessary to ensure clean margins (which would also leave a larger scar than necessary on a very visable area), while my derm referred me with the goal of taking as little as necessary and having a smaller scar.

Dr Drake did not listen to my concerns. I was dismissed and unheard. I could not have been more disappointed in my visit.

The provider walked in the room, and the very first thing he said to me I have bad news, I do not operate on smokers. Literally the first thing he said to me. I replied, that's great, but what does that have to do with me? I have not smoked in 25+ years. He read my chart wrong. LOL. That put me off just a bit, but I can see where that mistake might be made. He instead should have entered the room and confirmed that I smoke (which I do NOT) before making that statement. LOL
