Making the Rounds with Dr. David Rodeberg
For this edition of Making the Rounds, we interviewed Dr. David Rodeberg, chief of pediatric surgery and operating room medical director at Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Dr. Rodeberg’s extensive clinical experience includes a six-year stretch as pediatric trauma director at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Tell us about your work
The diseases and the problems that affect children are things that I can have a large impact on. I am taking out their appendix. I'm taking out their cancer. I am doing things that are going to give them years of life.
Taking care of pediatric patients is taking care of both the patient and the family because parents, although they are probably more cavalier about their own health issues, become very protective about their child. As they should.
What drew you to pediatric medicine?
Honestly, I just love taking care of kids. I enjoy the interactions, enjoy talking with them. The fact that I can impact their entire life, that is a wonderful thing. It's very rewarding.
