About

Patrick O'Donnell received his medical and doctorate degrees from Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He then completed a fellowship in musculoskeletal oncology at the University of Toronto, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Center, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Personal Statement

As an orthopaedic oncologist, I get to treat both adult and pediatric patients. I operate on every bone in the body so I get many different surgeries, and it's made me a better surgeon. I treat many different types of cancers, including tumors that have started outside the bone and tumors that have spread inside the bone.

I help people by performing reconstructive surgery. We often help patients who have periprosthetic fractures with tumor-style prosthesis. Additionally, we are able to use many surgical techniques to help patients who don’t have cancer.

Patients who previously had no options for their hip or knee have options now. We can replace entire bones, including the femur, the biggest bone in the body. We can provide a cancer-style prosthesis that we connect with a knee replacement and a hip replacement and provide patients a new leg to walk on.

I waited an hour and thirty minutes to get to the exam room. After waiting in the exam room another fifteen minutes I opened the to just leave, when another physician in the hall said for me to wait and she would get the doctor. After another ten minute wait Dr. O'Donald came in introduced himself sat down and asked me why are you here and what do you want me to do for you. Dr. O'Donald was very short with me and said that my X-ray was good and the amount of pain I was in from my knee did not compare with the results of the X-ray. He indicated that the amount of pain I was in wasn't really that bad because the X-ray of the knee only showed swelling and some inflammation and mild arthritis, that nothing was wrong and he was a surgeon and my X-ray showed nothing that would require his service. Just as he was leaving he said he said for me to wait he was prescribing a cane for me so that I would not have any more falls.

When the Dr came in he shook my hand and then stated what do you want me to tell you? First thing he said. I really didn't understand that question and really thought they didn't want to see me and that I was a aggravation. I was coming back to this doctor because he was so kind and helpful when I saw him at the markey cancer center. I wanted to make sure the tumor wasn't causing the pain due to the fact my Dr had just looked at an x-ray and not a MRI. I was told it was just arthritis and not the tumor and basically deal with it until I needed knee replacement. I dont think they wanted to take the time for me at this appointment and like I said before was an aggravation.
