UK HealthCast: Dr. Caitlin Fiorillo on hearing loss in children

Dr. Caitlin Fiorillo

UK HealthCast is a podcast series featuring interviews with UK HealthCare experts on a variety of health-related topics, from how to recognize stroke symptoms to what patients need to know about clinical trials and more.

In honor of #WorldHearingDay, this week’s HealthCast features Dr. Caitlin Fiorillo, a pediatric otalaryngologist at UK HealthCare. World Hearing Day is recognized on March 3 every year to raise awareness on how to prevent hearing loss and deafness, and to promote ear and hearing care across the world.

Listen as Dr. Fiorillo shares her insight on hearing loss in children, the impact on their day-to-day life, and the care we provide in our Pediatric ENT Department at UK Kentucky Children’s Hospital:

“Here at UK, we provide exceptional care. Dr. Azbell, Dr. Iverson and I are all pediatric ENTs, meaning our patients are only children. We have all been through an additional year of training at top institutions to be able to manage and take care of complex problems in children.

Treating children with hearing loss can often require a multidisciplinary approach. We can provide our expertise in managing the surgical aspect of their care, but we also have pediatric audiologists that have additional training to work with infants and kids to test their hearing.

For patients who do need surgery, we're fortunate to have an amazing group of pediatric anesthesiologists that are experts in the care of children just before, during and after their surgery.

We also have additional resources, including speech therapy and networks to get children hearing aids and other therapies that they do need for their hearing loss.”
