M. Kyle Smoot, MD

Prior to joining UK HealthCare in 2015, Kyle Smoot was an Associate Professor at University of Iowa Health Care where he served as the founding Program Director of the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics Sports Medicine Fellowship. At Iowa, also also served as team physician to The University of Iowa Athletics Department including team physician and travel responsibilities to The University of Iowa Football program.

He received his medical degree from the Wright State University, Boonshoft School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio and completed a residency and Sports Medicine Fellowship training at UK. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. Dr. Smoot is interested in all aspects of sports medicine and has specific interests musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound guided procedures.

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Junior Traveling Fellows

Dr. Smoot was one of only three sports medicine providers selected by the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) to travel to Japan from Sept. 17 through Oct. 2, 2019 with Senior Fellow Brian Halpern, MD, a founder and past president of AMSSM.  

The purpose of the AMSSM Traveling Fellowship program is to encourage academic interchange, share research and explore common clinical interests among sports medicine leaders. The experience includes the opportunity to view live patient encounters, tour sports medicine facilities, share cases and spend time with regional experts in sports medicine.

The Traveling Fellowship program is funded from an educational grant provided to the AMSSM Foundation from DJO Global.

"I am excited to represent the AMSSM in 2019 as a traveling fellow to Japan," Smoot said. "The opportunity to learn of international models of sports medicine care and possible clinical and academic collaboration with our colleagues from Japan is truly an honor. I thank the AMSSM Foundation and DJO Global for supporting this activity.
