About
Omar El Kawkgi, MD, joins the UK Markey Cancer Center to lead the Thyroid Oncology Program. He also serves as an assistant professor in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He has expertise in the diagnosis and management of thyroid neoplasms, including benign thyroid nodules and thyroid cancers.
Dr. El Kawkgi earned his medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin before completing his internal medicine residency at the University of Massachusetts. He then completed his endocrinology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, where he served as an assistant professor of medicine and consultant in endocrinology.
He is an associate editor of the Clinical Thyroidology journal and a peer reviewer for the Thyroid Journal, as well as the BMJ and the BMJ Case Report, journals of the British Medical Association. He is also the author of numerous national and international presentations and peer-reviewed articles.
Dr. El Kawkgi is passionate about medical education and serves as the associate program director of the UK HealthCare Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship Program. He has been a visiting professor at multiple institutions, including the University of Calgary, the University of Massachusetts-Baystate Health and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Outside of work, Dr. El Kawkgi enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, being outdoors and playing soccer.

My goal is to partner with you to understand your individual healthcare needs and then work together to design a personalized treatment plan that fits in your life. My approach to your care is to work with other doctors, nurses and members of the healthcare team to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated plan. In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, travel, being outdoors and playing soccer.
