About
Amanda Saltzman received her medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans in 2011. She finished her urology residency at the combined Ochsner Clinic and Louisiana State University program in New Orleans in 2016. She then completed her pediatric urology fellowship training in 2018 at the University of Colorado in Denver.
Dr. Saltzman offers the full breadth of pediatric urology management to her patients, including treatment for hypospadias, undescended testicles, hernias/hydroceles, vesiculo-ureteral reflux, ureteropelvic junction obstruction, hydronephrosis, etc. She also offers minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery to her patients.
Dr. Saltzman’s clinical interests include pediatric urology and pediatric urologic oncology. She is specifically skilled in pediatric, adolescent and young adult urologic oncology, including management of adrenal, renal (Wilms tumor, renal cell carcinoma, angiomyolipoma), testicular/genital (germ cell tumors), retroperitoneal and pelvic (rhabdomyosarcoma) tumors unique to this population. She is also interested in patients with hereditary cancer syndromes such as von Hippel Lindau, tuberous sclerosis and Birt-Hogg-Dube, among others. Additionally, she will provide oncofertility and survivorship programs to patients affected by any malignancy in childhood as these patients frequently experience late effects related to their cancer therapy.
Personal Statement
My decision to pursue urology centered on the use of advanced technology in surgery, i.e. minimally invasive treatment of virtually all urologic conditions (endoscopy for stones, laparoscopy and robotics for cancer and reconstruction, etc.). Once in residency, I realized the use of technology was a skill that could be applied to all urologic subspecialties.
I decided to pursue pediatric urology because I liked interacting with both children and parents, and I enjoyed the breadth of conditions in this population. I was also very interested in urologic oncology and strongly thought about pursuing a urologic oncology fellowship. I attempted to bridge these clinical interests by training at the University of Colorado, which has a preeminent pediatric, adolescent and young adult urologic oncology program.
I try to treat each and every patient as if they were my own child, and remember that treatment of my patients involves treatment of the entire family. I like to take my time with all patients, answering each and every question so that we, patient, family and surgeon, come to decisions together as a team. I frequently give patients my personal contact information for contact after their visit in case questions or concerns arise, and I try to stay in communication with primary care physicians with updates. I also strive for complete honesty and transparency when it comes to discussing my evaluation and recommendations. It is very important to me that families completely understand what is happening and why I am recommending various treatments so that they feel empowered and comfortable with the treatment plan.
I was born and raised in Toronto and thus love skiing and watching hockey. Once I moved to New Orleans, I became a huge Saints fan, and I try to watch all of their games. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my daughter swimming, cooking, reading and dancing.
