Joanne E. Brown graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the State University of New York, College at Plattsburgh. She received both her Master of Science degree in nursing and Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Kentucky. She is nationally certified as a women's health nurse practitioner, as a family nurse practitioner and as a certified tobacco treatment specialist.

She is a member of the Kentucky Coalition of Nurse Practitioners & Nurse Midwives, the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the UK LGBTQ* Advisory Board. She is actively involved and holds leadership positions with the American College Health Association.  She enjoys collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across campus and participating in research activities.

Prior to joining University Health Service, she worked as an APRN in a private OB-GYN practice and for a community-based free clinic. She joined UHS in 2006 and although her primary focus is sexual health, she also sees tobacco treatment patients and primary care patients. As one of the providers with the Transform Health Clinic, she provides PrEP and hormone therapy for students and is committed to providing quality care in an inclusive environment.
