Foot & Ankle Treatments
The orthopaedic surgeons at UK Healthcare are among the nation’s leading experts in the treatment of foot and ankle pain and injuries. Our providers at UK Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine handle a wide variety of foot and ankle disorders – from simple hammertoes to complex arthritic ankles. Visit our Foot & Ankle Pain page for a more complete list of conditions we treat.
Depending on age, lifestyle and the severity of symptoms, treatment options will vary. Some foot and ankle pain can be treated without surgery – through bracing, physical therapy or other approaches. Other conditions may require minimally invasive surgery or major reconstruction. Our team will offer a treatment plan personalized for you.

Treatment approaches
- Joint preservation: This alternative to total joint replacement uses non-surgical techniques, such as injections, plasma therapy or stem cell therapy, as well as surgical techniques, to preserve the joint. As a result, joint replacement surgery can often be delayed or prevented.
- Minimally invasive surgery: Rather than performing surgery through a large, open incision, surgeons can access the foot and ankle and perform surgery through one or more smaller incisions.
- Reconstructive surgery: Reconstructive surgery may be recommended to help restore function after an injury.
- Physical therapy: Physical therapy can help restore range of motion and relieve pain. It may be used alone or before or after a patient has surgery.
- Bracing: An immobilization device such as a splint or brace may be used to help stabilize an injury and allow it to heal properly in cases where surgery is not required.
- Wound treatment: Physicians with advanced training in wound management provide expert care for chronic, non-healing lower-extremity wounds – such as those caused by diabetes, poor circulation or other conditions – at our Wound Care Clinic.
