About
Dr. Shari Meyerson, an accomplished thoracic surgeon and nationally known educator, serves as chief of thoracic surgery at UK HealthCare and provides surgical leadership to the thoracic oncology team at UK Markey Cancer Center.
Meyerson earned her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1996. She completed a residency in general surgery at University of Chicago Hospitals and a fellowship in thoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center.
Her primary clinical interest is in treating lung cancer patients with a focus on not only curing cancer but also maintaining excellent quality of life for her patients. She specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques and has extensive experience performing and training other providers in video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). In addition to her expertise in caring for lung cancer patients, Meyerson cares for patients with a wide range of thoracic conditions, including esophageal, mediastinal and pleural diseases.
Meyerson’s academic focus is training surgical residents, and she is widely recognized for her innovation in surgical education. At Northwestern University in Chicago, she served as program director for the general and thoracic surgery residency programs for many years. In 2015, she completed a Master of Education degree at the University of Cincinnati to enhance her skills as an educator.
Personal Statement
Needing to see a thoracic surgeon can be frightening and overwhelming. I always make sure my patients understand what is wrong and how I will work to make them better. The goal of treatment is not only to fix the problem but to do so in a way that focuses on the patient’s quality of life.
