About
Dr. Garrett Oberst is an ophthalmologist at UK Advanced Eye Care who treats glaucoma and cataracts. He uses a wide range of tools — including medications, in-office laser procedures and surgeries — to slow or prevent vision loss.
Dr. Oberst is a lifelong Kentuckian who was born and raised in Louisville. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Butler University in Indianapolis before returning to the Bluegrass State to attend the UK College of Medicine. He remained at UK for both his ophthalmology residency and glaucoma fellowship. During his residency, he served as chief resident and received multiple honors, including the Joseph Childs Award and the Best Resident Research Project Award.
Personal Statement
I chose ophthalmology because of the unique opportunity it provides to preserve or restore vision — something that can dramatically improve a patient’s quality of life. Within ophthalmology, I was drawn to glaucoma because it presents both clinical complexity and meaningful continuity of care. Glaucoma is a chronic, progressive disease known as the “thief of sight,” and it disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minority groups.
Because glaucoma is rarely “cured,” I believe in building long-term partnerships with my patients. My philosophy is that patients should be active participants in their care. I strive to develop treatment plans that are not only clinically effective but also minimally disruptive to each patient’s daily life. This requires an understanding of both the disease and the individual. I take pride in using the latest diagnostic and therapeutic technologies to offer personalized, evidence-based care that aligns with each patient’s needs and values.
As an academic physician, I am also committed to education and mentorship. I value the opportunity to contribute to the training of future ophthalmologists and to collaborate with colleagues on improving outcomes for patients with glaucoma.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife — a faculty member at the UK College of Dentistry — as well as our dog Cricket (a 10-pound Jack Russell/chihuahua mix) and our foster daughter.
