EmPATH Psychiatric Unit

UK HealthCare EmPATH – the first program of its kind in Kentucky – is specially equipped to quickly treat adult patients undergoing mental illness and substance use crises.

EmPATH, which stands for Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing, is an evidence-based model of crisis care that provides trauma-informed, compassionate treatment. It is an alternative to traditional emergency departments, whose long wait times and sometimes overwhelming environment can worsen mental distress.

We first stabilize the patient in our calm, therapeutic environment before connecting them to outpatient services. Our primary goal is to avoid unnecessary hospitalization by offering prompt assessment and treatment and up to 23 hours of care. Treatment may include:

  • Medications
  • Therapy
  • Peer support services
  • Education
  • Use of coping activities

Each patient is offered a recliner chair in a calming room upon entry. An outdoor patio also offers a place for reflection, while specially trained staff are able to offer support and hope throughout the entire stay.

The EmPATH model has successfully reduced hospital admission and involvement with the criminal justice system and improved patient satisfaction.

How can a person in crisis receive care?

We accept walk-ins as well as patients transported by emergency services or police. You do not need to make an appointment.

We understand that mental health emergencies can happen at any time. That’s why we are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
