The first doctor who came in was limited in his explanation, but when the doctor we'd been assigned came in we got much more detailed info and I felt better about the experience (*Dr. Hosey was great).

I don't plan on seeing Dr. Hosey again. I left feeling incredibly deflated, disappointed, anxious, nauseous, and concerned about my ability to regain full function and improve strength in my lower body. I felt like I was being interrogated about how I got there and why I was there -- he asked me how I got my appointment, who scheduled it, etc. As I understand it, since I requested the MRI through my PCP she set up the appointment. All I know is that I was contacted by Sports Medicine to be there and so I was there. I figured I would be discussing the MRI and was glad that I got some clarification on the findings. Hosey explained that he himself has similar health issues that I am now facing and that I would need to modify my fitness goals and routine to accommodate my condition. I tried explaining that my condition was preventing me from realizing my goals because of the discomfort I am feeling (I am not experiencing pain regularly), but I never got a chance to discuss specific questions that I had about how he thought it best to accomplish my goals or how to modify my strength and fitness routine. There were more broad strokes -- he told me that maybe I shouldn't run as much or should walk instead of bike if it helps. He recommended that I seek out an appointment with a sports psychologist and/or try an experimental treatment. I am sure Dr. Hosey sees some much more traumatic cases (tears, dislocations, etc), and I understand that my condition might not be considered a critical result but it very much affects my day-to-day and is something that has been incredibly diffulct for me to adjust to. My PT helped me a lot with improving my hip strength and general stability but what I really need is someone that can provide some more detailed consult on my fitness routine and how I should be altering it to optimize recovery for this lingering issue that has persisted for nearly a year and a half now. I was hopeful that I could discuss some of those details with Dr. Hosey but felt that I was being dismissed and like I was being difficult when I expressed my frustration about my condition and how to approach achieving my goals while also promoting recovery.

I saw Dr. Blessman first, he examined my knee and listened intently to my concerns, examined my knee, told me options. Then Dr. Hosey came inListened to me again, gave me treatment options and Dr. Blessman treated my knee while Dr. Hosey stood by. I feel very blessed to have been treated by both of these wonderful Dr.'s!

Everyone involved in my visit, from the X-Ray techs to the MDs, were very helpful and provided great care. However, at the doctor's advice I tried to schedule a Physical Therapy appointment as soon as possible and none of UK HMO's in-network providers (that I could reach) had available appointments for the next month.

The fellow that saw me was great, but I didn't have a great experience with Dr. Hosey. I was told what the problem was, but I wasn't clearly explained what that meant. When I asked him how to fix it, he said you can't fix cartilage. I mentioned I really enjoyed heavy weight lifting and he replied that then I would have to deal with the pain, rather than working with me to find solutions/alternatives. My understanding after his consultation was that I would never be able to fully resume physical activity, which considering I'm only 19 was terrifying to hear. Since he said I couldn't fix the issue with me knee, I was even more confused with the treatment he was prescribing (like why I'm going to PT if I can't fix my knee). He wanted to prescribe me anti-inflammatory medications and when I explained I couldn't have them (it's listed on my chart) seemed to get frustrated. He asked if I could take steroids and seemed frustrated when I didn't know, but I don't know if there are blood thinners in the one he wanted to prescribe. I don't know what the medication is for, and when I looked at the order after it seems like it's an injection. I wasn't explained the benefits and risks with the steroid, and I've heard that getting steroid injections at a younger age can cause issues for the long term so I don't know if that's something I should do. He never asked what my goals were in recovery, he didn't ask about how physically active I am (I'm on the UK Equestrian Team but he never mentioned it in his notes), and the only really personal recommendation I got was that I couldn't lift weights anymore. After Dr. Hosey left, I mentioned to the attendant that I had a lot of questions still and she brought back the fellow who did a much better job of explaining the injury, the treatment plan (regarding physical therapy), and the long term effects of the injury. He was a lot more empathetic and let me know that they would work with me to keep my active lifestyle and that I wasn't going to have to stop doing things I enjoy, I just might have to modify them.
