About
Dr. Peter J. Timoney earned his medical degree at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He served as an intern and resident in the UK Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. He completed a two-year ASOPRS oculoplastics fellowship at Indiana University in Indianapolis.
He is the recipient of many ophthalmology and research awards and has contributed to numerous presentations, research projects and publications.
His clinical interests include clinical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of orbital and periorbital trauma and disease processes. These processes include reconstructive surgery specializing in the face, orbits, eyelids and lacrimal system (specifically, ophthalmic Graves’ disease, repair of oculofacial/orbital trauma, development and reconstruction of the anophthalmic socket, correction of eyelid malposition, and tearing/lacrimal outflow issues). He also specializes in cosmetic surgery of the eyelids and upper facial region that can restore a patient’s self-confidence in their appearance in providing a more rested state.
Currently, Dr. Timoney is the program director of the ASOPRS Accredited Fellowship at UK.
Personal Statement
I grew up in Dublin, Ireland and Lexington, Kentucky. I am proud of the educational experiences afforded and believe that they strengthen my understanding and appreciation of patients. I enjoy traveling with my family, rugby, tennis, beekeeping and reading.
As an oculoplastic surgeon, I specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, eye socket and tear drainage system. Vision is a vital sensory function and the appearance of the eyes profoundly affects how people view themselves. When impaired by trauma, cancer or the lapse of time, my job is to restore these critical aspects of a patient’s life.
My approach to care is to build partnerships with my patients, educate them about their diseases and offer various treatment options. I guide them through the treatment process to ensure they receive the highest level of care. Patients know themselves best and, given the right information, can make the best choices for themselves. I’m proud to be part of the University of Kentucky. Not only do I get to care for wonderful and interesting patients, but I also have the opportunity to pass my knowledge and expertise on to the next generation of physicians.
