Personal Statement

I chose to get into the field of medicine because I grew up in a medically underserved community and understood the value of the medical profession and the care and importance of various doctors in fostering a healthy lifestyle and ultimately a healthier community. Also, I injured my shoulder when I played tennis in college and went to see an orthopaedic surgeon who gave me excellent care and helped me to fully recover from my injury which further peaked my interest in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine.

Although I’m a surgeon, and I love surgery, I really want people to have surgery only when the benefits outweigh the risks. I will do everything in my power to treat people non-surgically first. I think if we as a society or community can help people non-surgically, we’ve all won.

There’s really nothing better than seeing people in the hall, or seeing people out in the community, or in my office, saying that they’re doing better, or that I helped them play tennis or ride their bike or play golf again – or that I helped get back to playing sports, or doing what they love. That’s what inspires me.

I have an integrated practice where I work directly with a physical therapist, and athletic trainers if it’s a sports-related injury. We’re all a team, and we work together to help the patient.
