A child's neurologic system is complex. And problems that arise in the brain or nervous system during childhood can cause serious complications and developmental delays.

That's where the Child Neurology team at the UK Kentucky Neuroscience Institute (KNI) can make a difference. KNI's providers – board certified in pediatrics, child neurology, headaches, epilepsy and neuro-oncology – use advanced technology for the diagnosis, evaluation, management and treatment of pediatric neurologic conditions. We diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including:

The UK difference

Under new leadership since 2023, our team has expanded, both in size and in breadth of experience. Our child neurologists are equipped to treat a broad range of neurologic conditions.

Program highlights include:

  • Dedicated epileptologists trained in child neurology.
  • Special rooms for kids with epilepsy at Golisano Children's at UK, providing a child-friendly environment where kids can be comfortably monitored, diagnosed and treated.
  • Advanced treatment options, such as new genetic treatments for some children with spinal muscular atrophy.
  • Partnership with Golisano Children's at UK's DanceBlue Hematology/Oncology Clinic, bringing together experts from neurosurgery and pediatric hematology-oncology to care for children with primary and secondary brain tumors.
  • The only multidisciplinary headache clinic in the region focused on children, teens and young adults up to age 25.
  • Streamlined care through our Neurology Evaluation and Management Optimization (NEMO) Clinic, reducing a typically months-long process of diagnosing neurologic developmental disorders into a one-day visit. The clinic includes a child neurologist, speech-language pathologists, occupational and physical therapists, psychologists and more.
  • Access to and treatment by UK HealthCare's Comprehensive Stroke Center, ensuring young stroke patients have access to the highest level of stroke care.
  • Close collaboration with the state’s Office for Children with Special Health Care Needs to make advanced neurologic care accessible and affordable to families across Kentucky.
