APP Spotlight

Melissa Soper

The UK HealthCare Office of Advanced Practice is pleased to announce a new APP Spotlight Profile honoring Melissa Soper. Melissa is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Internal Medicine-Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine. She graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with her RN, BSN degree and began her nursing career in the NICU. As a post-graduate, she worked for two years in Nephrology and Bone and Mineral Metabolism until she assumed her current role as an APRN in Pulmonary/Critical Care.

As a leader in the department, Melissa is a smiling face and clinical resource to everyone she encounters. One of her colleagues had this to say about her: “She is a beautiful combination of academic intelligence and clinical reasoning with time and patience to care individually about her patients (and their families) along with the nurses, fellow nurse practitioners and other inter-professional colleagues. I have seen Melissa go above and beyond for those patients that are depending on her. She is truly a patient advocate in the truest sense of the word.“

In addition to patient care excellence, one of the duties she loves most is teaching. She is a preceptor to both RN and APRN students and loves the opportunity to give back and share her knowledge and experience with future RNs and APRNs interested in Critical Care Medicine. Some of the wisdom she tries to impress upon new nursing students is to “look at the whole patient, not a diagnosis or a specific problem and to keep an open mind when considering different diagnoses.” She also advises her students to set landmarks and goals and actively work toward those goals and always be looking for additional ways to serve as one should never stop learning and pursuing education.

Please join us in congratulating Melissa on her APP Spotlight nomination.
