Treatment at Markey Cancer Center

Collaborative patient care

The Markey Cancer center has developed a variety of specialized multidisciplinary cancer specialty teams that include nurses, doctors and other professionals throughout UK HealthCare to give our patients the best care. These innovative teams evaluate and treat the disease, which means that physicians and nurses from multiple specialties work with each patient to develop the best treatment plan for their particular circumstances. This team approach also addresses the complexity of cancer. Our teams include:

  • A dedicated primary nurse
  • An oncology nurse care manager
  • A dietitian
  • An oncology social worker (PDF, 135 KB)
  • A pharmacist
  • A chaplain
  • Volunteers
  • A physical or enterostomal therapist, if necessary
  • Patients and families – the most important members of our teams

The Markey Cancer Center also uses the full resources of the departments, colleges and more than 150 faculty throughout the University of Kentucky and UK HealthCare to further the prevention, treatment and cure of cancer, including the ones below.
