Get Fit. Be Smart. Don't Start.
“Get Fit, Be Smart, Don’t Start” is a program where smoking, nutrition, screenings, and general health and wellness information are discussed at length with children of all ages. It is vital to reach Kentucky’s youth with messages of health and wellness and prevention. Young people should understand at an early age that their decisions now can affect their health and chances of getting cancer later in life. Interactive displays and educational tools are presented and distributed to students.
This program is presented in classrooms, health fairs, summer camps, and school assemblies.
Body and Soul
Body and Soul is a new wellness and prevention program that targets church youth groups.
Markey’s outreach director addresses wellness throughout life (Body), while the church’s youth minister addresses spiritual health (Soul). Several interactive displays and materials are used to convey the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Smoking, nutrition, screenings and check-ups, and exercise are all discussed. The program is typically presented during regular Wednesday night church services.

Expressions of Courage Art Education
The Expressions of Courage Art Education Program is an ongoing health and wellness program provided throughout the year. Markey Cancer Center is working with art classes across Kentucky to emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and encouraging others in their families to do the same.
After an initial presentation about cancer screenings and wellness, the art teacher assigns students a project that should demonstrate how cancer has affected them or their loved ones. After the projects are completed, an art show is held where friends and family are encouraged to attend. Awards are given out and screenings offered to those in attendance.
For those interested in participating in the Expressions of Courage Art Education Program, please contact Community Outreach Director, Melissa Hounshell, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
