How is patent foramen ovale treated?
If a patent foramen ovale doesn't cause problems, such as a stroke, then typically no treatment is recommended. You might need treatment if you also have other heart defects or if you had a stroke caused by a blood clot. Treatment includes a catheter procedure or surgery to close the opening in the heart.
