About

Personal Statement

I grew up in Rochester, Minnesota. It's a small town, but it has several thousand doctors, and my dad was a pediatrician. Pretty much everybody I knew was a doctor, and it seemed like a cool thing to do.

I chose orthopaedics because of my love of sports. I wasn't a spectacular athlete, but I played a lot of sports and enjoyed being around sports. When I heard about the role of team doctors, it seemed like a good fit for me. I get to work with several of the UK teams, which obviously is a lot of fun.

I mostly treat shoulder problems. I see a lot of young athletes with instability problems and older people with rotator cuff problems and all kinds of other different shoulder abnormalities.

One of the misconceptions people have about rehab is that they'll have to work hard to push through the pain, which obviously, in certain surgeries or certain rehabs is important. But a lot of times it's almost the opposite. Once people start feeling well we have to slow them down because some things take months to heal. Commonly, my younger patients will feel "good as new" rather quickly and start pushing themselves too hard before they've totally healed. So I spend a lot of my time trying to slow people down while they're healing after surgery instead of pushing them like you do with many other surgeries.

There have been so many advancements in technology that have made arthroscopic shoulder surgery so much easier than it was in the past. We are able to see inside joints and give patients better outcomes than they would've had years ago.

He doesn't take time to listen. I drive 2 and a half hours to get there. He doesn't spend about 2 or 3 minutes with me and he's gone. That's the only thing I dislike.

I am so thankful I was able to be a patient of Dr Mair, he is thoughtful, so knowledgeable and easy to talk to. I never feel like he is in a hurry to get to the next patient as he will spend as much time as is necessary to make sure I have all my questions answered, and that I am sure of my course of action on my end to heal properly. The entire staff is fantastic.

Dr. Mair looked like he was ready to leave as soon as he walked through the door. He barely did any tests, then asked me where I'd like my inflammation shot, which I can't get until a month later. The Doctor did not offer any insight into why I'm getting pain or if it could be a tear. No talk of physical therapy. Flat out terrible

The person that came in prior to the doctor never identified herself so I don't know if she was a NP, PA, resident??? She listened to my issues, made some suggestions, understood my concerns. When the doctor came in he asked nothing except did I want the alternative injection I had talked to the previous person about and he already had it loaded in a syringe. He never mentioned PT, a brace or taping as I had talked to the previous person about as options to delay surgery as long as possible. He grumbled that he understood that it wasn't a good time right now for me to consider a shoulder replacement and his attitude was what do you want from me. He scoffed at my report of the side effects that the previous steroid injection had caused. When he saw that my shoulder was taped for support he said all that stuff has to come off if you want the shot. I told him whatever needed to be done was fine, but I knew that it wasn't necessary to remove all the taping that was supporting my shoulder and was disappointed that he was making light of the only thing that was enabling me to function on a daily basis. He gave the injection and then said so do you want to see me in a couple months or what?. I felt dismissed, spoken down to and ridiculed. He may be the best shoulder surgeon around but his bedside manner needs a lot of work.
