About

Dr. Motiei is a neurosurgeon subspecialized in spine surgery. After a long training in neurosurgery further complimented by fellowship training in spine surgery in world-known university brands, he started his practice in University of Kentucky as a complex spine surgeon.

His continued training has made him proficient in different surgical methods and techniques, including open, mini-open, microscopic and minimally invasive surgery (MIS) procedures. He sees different techniques as complimentary tools in taking care of patients and believe that an unbiased surgeon who is skilled in more than one technique can better serve his/her community. Dr. Motiei is the first to perform certain procedures in UK and Lexington, including MIS Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion (LLIF) and MIS Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion (OLIF).

Although Dr. Motiei routinely takes care of all aspects of spine disorders, his specific passion and interest is spine deformity and spine tumors. He believes that being able to stand erect and functional without pain is a unique feature of humankind, and as a complex and deformity spine surgeon, He feels privileged to have the surgical skillset for that.

His goal in career is to give all patients the highest quality and most updated treatment they deserve. This will only be possible through hard and honest work, fruitful companionship with colleagues and staff, as well as continued engagement in teaching, learning, and research. He sees UK as an excellent workspace to obtain that goal.

I was not impressed with the doctor. He came in the office with a suit on. I have never had a doctor see with a suit. He didn't explain what he saw on my MRI's He basically came in and gave me my options. My reason for seeing this doctor was for a second opinion to the Spinal cord Stimulator as to whether I should go through with it based on what he saw. I already knew about some of the options he gave me. Also didn't understand why I would have another microdiscectomy (one of the options) when the first one was not successful. I would not recommend this doctor and will tell my primary care doctor not to refer anyone to this doctor.

I've had surgery on my back. A microdiscectomy. The surgeon told me that there's still a herniation present. He did not tell me if that herniation was a result of me doing the wrong things after surgery or a result of them not removing enough during the procedure. The only thing he told me is that it was present and my options were another surgery or a series of injections. I've exhausted all of my sick time taking off for this and now I'm off for another 6 weeks. This has been a horrible experience in full. Probably the worst year of my life. I had no communication after the surgery as to what I should be doing - activities or exercise. I was left on my own. I've been in horrible pain for the last 5 weeks and finally got to relay this information to the surgeon 6 weeks after. Now I'm in for another 6 weeks of uncertainty. All the while exhausting the vacation I've built up for the last 8 years working at UK.
