J. Scott Roth is both the Chief of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Section and the Director of the Center for Advanced Training and Simulation. He specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgery with a focus in the areas of foregut surgery (hiatal and diaphragmatic hernias, gastroesophagel reflux (GERD), achalasia, gastric tumors) and abdominal hernias (ventral, incisional and inguinal hernias), abdominal wall reconstruction (endoscopic and posterior component separation) and solid organ surgery (spleen, adrenal, and pancreas).
Dr. Roth is a nationally recognized leader in minimally invasive surgery. He received his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and subsequently trained in Surgery at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Kentucky. He returned to the University of Kentucky in 2008 as both the Director of MIS and Chief of GI Surgery. He is the Fellowship Director for the Minimally Invasive Surgery fellowship training program.
Dr. Roth's research laboratory is evaluating mechanisms of improving hernia repair outcomes through the inhibition of Matrix Metalloproteinases resulting in alterations in collagen deposition. He is the Principal Investigator in several ongoing clinical trials evaluating outcomes in hernia repair.
Dr. Roth is fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of American and Gastrointestinal Surgery, the American Hernia Society, the Society of University of Surgeons, Southeastern Surgical Congress and the American Medical Association. He currently serves as the SAGES adviser to the AMA CPT Editorial Panel and is involved in the SAGES Legislative Committee and Hernia Task Force.
