Ophthalmic genetics, the branch of medicine concerned with inherited eye diseases, has fewer than 100 practitioners worldwide, and in July 2017, the team at UK Advanced Eye Care became home to one of these rare practitioners, Dr. Ramiro Maldonado. Dr. Maldonado treats inherited retinal diseases as well as common retinal conditions, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and vain occlusion. We recently caught up with Dr. Maldonado for this week's Making the Rounds to learn more about his specialty and philosophy of care.
What inspired you to become an ophthalmologist?
My father was an ophthalmologist. He was one of the first retinal specialists in Ecuador. He had a true passion for research, and he taught me that you should always look for something else and cultivated in me the desire to find solutions to problems.
How do you tailor your care to your young patients?
Especially when I see children, I know that the news could be life-changing for parents. We spend the necessary time to talk to the parents to discuss what is going on.
This is a fairly unique field. There are about 10 centers in the U.S. offering these services. There are less than 100 specialists of this type in the world, so we are thrilled to offer this service to our patient population.
What do you like best about your work?
I truly enjoy seeing children because I get to know them very well, and I get to see them grow. I feel that I am part of the family because I make a special bond with a kid but also with the parents. It's just a special relationship.
